Power Solutions for Bike Touring

When preparing for this trip, I elected to partner with long time friend and genius engineer, Micheal Wilson, to consult with me on power solutions.  I knew I would be spending a lot of time off the grid and was looking for ways to generate and store power through alternative means.  My stipulations were as follows.

  1. All products must be worth their weight.  The current weight of my gear at the beginning of the trip (not including bike and bike components was 78 lbs.   I did not want this to get much higher.
  2. All products must be weather proof, crash proof, and idiot proof.  Its going to be a long trip, and I figure, if it can go wrong, it probably will.  Furthermore, repairs must be able to be made on the road with readily available equipment.
  3. All products must demonstrate to what extent they could meet my power consumption needs.  How long a day would the device need to be in use.  What were are the conditions necessary for using the device (sun, river, bicycling, etc) -- and how many hours of computer life (by far my biggest power need) would the device generate.
